Energy obligations in Brussels

What does the EED mean for your business?

In the Brussels-Capital Region, large companies are required to carry out periodic energy audits under the European Energy Efficiency Directive (EED).

This requirement applies to companies that are not classified as SMEs and must be carried out every four years.

For many organisations, however, this is more than just an administrative obligation. It requires a thorough analysis of energy consumption, processes and installations — as well as accurate reporting to the IBGE-BIM.

Encon helps companies not only to comply with this obligation correctly, but also to derive tangible value from it.

What does an EED energy audit involve?

An energy audit carried out in accordance with the EED Directive provides a comprehensive overview of your organisation’s energy consumption.

This includes:

  • buildings and installations
  • industrial processes
  • transport and support systems

The analysis is based on up-to-date and measurable data and provides a clear overview of where energy is consumed and where optimisations can be made.

In addition, specific measures are identified, ranging from quick wins to longer-term investments.

From obligation to opportunity

Although the EED audit is a legal requirement, its real added value lies in the insights it provides.

Companies gain:

  • insight into their biggest energy consumers
  • a well-founded overview of energy-saving measures
  • priorities based on return on investment and impact
  • a clear basis for future investments

By looking beyond compliance, the audit becomes a lever for structural cost savings and more efficient energy use.

Work is currently under way to transpose this revised directive into Brussels legislation. The amended regulations are expected to come into force from the end of 2026.

What will change from the end of 2026?

The revised European EED Directive introduces a major reform of the Flemish energy audit requirements.

The focus is shifting from company size to actual energy consumption. As a result, the thresholds set out below would apply from the end of 2026.

This would mean that the current audit requirement for large companies would be abolished and replaced by a system based on actual energy consumption.

What makes Encon stand out?

Carrying out an energy audit is one thing. Deriving real value from it requires a different approach.

Encon combines in-depth technical knowledge of energy and installations with extensive experience in EED and IBGE-BIM projects. We look not only at what is technically possible, but above all at what is practical and cost-effective for your organisation.

Moreover, our support does not stop at analysis and reporting. We actively contribute ideas on implementation, ensuring that the audit is translated into concrete improvements that are actually put into practice.
