Puratos is an international family-owned business with more than a century of experience in bakery, patisserie and chocolate technology. Sustainability has been part of its DNA for years: better nutrition, improved health and respect for future generations. When plans were developed for a new production facility in Belgium, Puratos wanted a factory extension that would bring this vision to life. Not only a high-performing facility, but also a credible showcase of its sustainability identity.
Puratos had clear sustainability ambitions for the Belcolade factory but was looking for a partner to translate them into a concrete and efficiently delivered BREEAM-certified building. Encon provided structure, technical know-how and expertise in sustainable implementation, energy simulations and certification support, ensuring that all sustainability choices were optimally aligned.
Puratos had a clear ambition, but needed guidance on how to organise the process in a practical, efficient and cost-effective way.
Seamless integration of design, engineering and strategy
Encon guided Puratos through the entire BREEAM Excellent process with one goal: to make its sustainability ambitions achievable, measurable and affordable. We brought structure to the complexity through a clear, integrated step-by-step plan, well-defined roles and consistent follow-up. We began with a materiality and feasibility analysis to determine precisely which sustainability measures would deliver the greatest value and score. We then guided all technical decisions, LCA analyses, supplier agreements and the complete preparation of the BREEAM documentation. By taking standards and legislation into account from the design phase onwards, we were able to organise processes more efficiently and avoid unnecessary costs, delays and rework.
Encon acted as both consultant and project manager: we structured the process, monitored deadlines, ensured accurate documentation and supported every strategic decision. The result was a process that became manageable for everyone involved, including designers, contractors, internal teams and senior management.
In this way, BREEAM became a guiding principle for smart choices that made the building more sustainable, efficient and future-proof.
Value creation through a carbon-neutral, energy-efficient and future-proof building
Puratos now has a carbon-neutral and energy-efficient production facility that is perfectly aligned with its mission and growth ambitions. The building serves as a powerful communication tool for customers, employees, investors and partners: it demonstrates that Puratos not only talks about sustainability, but also puts it into practice.
Energy-efficient technologies have led to a structural reduction in operating costs. Thanks to the BREEAM methodology, the building not only complies with current regulations but is also prepared for future standards and financing expectations. Moreover, the certification opens doors to banks and institutional partners that are increasingly focusing on ESG performance.
The building also delivers direct benefits for employees, including more natural light, better air quality, healthier materials and a workplace that promotes wellbeing. This strengthens employee retention and enhances Puratos’ attractiveness as an employer.
