Read moreRising energy costs called for a strategic approach
Ebema, a manufacturer of sustainable concrete solutions, was – like many industrial companies – confronted with sharply rising energy prices and growing pressure to improve sustainability performance.
Although the company had already launched several initiatives, it lacked an overarching strategy that aligned environmental ambitions with financial objectives. Investments needed to deliver not only lower CO₂ emissions but also strong economic returns, with clear payback periods and minimal disruption to day-to-day operations.
In addition, navigating subsidies, regulations and technology choices added further complexity. Ebema was looking for a partner that would go beyond providing advice: a partner that could challenge assumptions, set priorities and guide the entire process from analysis through to implementation.
From isolated initiatives to an integrated energy strategy
Encon developed a pragmatic and integrated approach tailored to Ebema’s specific needs. The process began with a comprehensive energy audit, mapping energy flows, consumption patterns and optimisation opportunities. Based on these insights, a phased action plan was developed, supported by a clear business case for each measure.
The implementation combined quick wins with strategic long-term investments:
More efficient compressed air system
A new compressor was installed and integrated with a heat recovery system. The recovered heat is now reused for domestic hot water production and space heating.
Large-scale relighting project
More than 26,000 m² of outdated lighting was replaced with energy-efficient LED technology, delivering both energy savings and improved workplace comfort.
Solar energy aligned with consumption
A total of 619 kWp of solar capacity was installed across two sites, optimised to maximise self-consumption and minimise grid dependency.
Electrification of the vehicle fleet
Encon managed the rollout of charging infrastructure to support a fleet of approximately 40 electric vehicles.
Support with grants and tendering
From preparing subsidy applications to selecting suppliers, Ebema received end-to-end support throughout the process.
Measurable savings and a future-proof energy strategy
The combination of targeted measures and a structured energy strategy delivered tangible results for Ebema, both immediately and over the long term.
Faster payback periods
Average payback periods decreased from approximately 3.5 years to just 1 year as a result of rising energy prices and improved energy performance.
Accelerated returns on solar investments
The expected payback period for the solar installations was reduced from 7–8 years to just 2–3 years.
Structural cost savings
Over a 20-year period, Ebema is expected to generate approximately €1.5 million in energy cost savings.
Maximising available incentives
The company successfully secured €28,000 in grants and benefited from enhanced tax incentives for charging infrastructure investments.
Operational benefits
Lower energy consumption, more predictable energy costs and an improved working environment contributed to greater operational efficiency.
Today, Ebema has a robust and scalable energy strategy in place, enabling the company to better withstand future energy market fluctuations.
Ebema demonstrates how a strategic approach to sustainability can do more than reduce costs. It strengthens resilience, improves competitiveness and creates long-term value. By treating energy not as a cost centre but as a strategic asset, companies can turn sustainability into a driver of growth and business continuity.

Ebema
Ebema demonstrates that strategic sustainability is not a cost, but an investment that pays for itself very quickly. With the right approach, energy challenges become a lever for long-term savings, profit and future security.
