Read moreFrom ambition to action: a municipality turning sustainability goals into results
As a municipality, Lanaken wanted to translate its climate ambitions into concrete action while keeping operational costs under control. The challenge was to turn policy objectives into measurable results without putting additional pressure on municipal services or budgets. Energy consumption, public infrastructure and municipal operations needed to become smarter and more sustainable — with tangible and demonstrable outcomes.
An integrated approach: from analysis to implementation
Together with Encon, an integrated approach was developed, starting with a thorough analysis of energy consumption and infrastructure. Based on these insights, a concrete action plan was created, prioritising measures with the greatest impact.
From improving energy efficiency in public buildings to optimising technical installations and identifying smart investment opportunities, every measure was assessed based on feasibility, impact and payback period. The result was a clear roadmap that was not only environmentally responsible but also financially sound — fully aligned with the principle of Delivering Profitable Sustainability.
Measurable savings and future-proof municipal operations
The implemented measures resulted in a significant reduction in energy consumption and associated costs. By using resources more efficiently, the municipality created additional budgetary room for other policy priorities and public services.
At the same time, the approach delivered a structural reduction in CO₂ emissions and contributed to a more resilient and future-proof infrastructure. The result? A municipality that not only operates more sustainably, but is also better prepared to meet future environmental, financial and societal challenges.
Lanaken
Lanaken demonstrates that well-considered sustainability choices are not only good for the climate, but also for the council’s finances. An investment that pays for itself — and continues to deliver returns.
