New energy regulations and opportunities: what does this mean for your business?

The energy transition is gathering pace, and businesses must adapt to changing regulations and market dynamics. Recent developments in solar energy (PV), battery energy storage systems (BESS) and smart charging infrastructure (SCS) bring not only new obligations but also fresh opportunities. Here’s what you need to know.

Nieuwe energieregels en kansen

Solar energy obligation: greater flexibility, more options

Regulations surrounding solar panels have been relaxed, giving businesses more time and options to meet the obligation. Instead of having a fully operational PV system by 30 June 2025, it is now sufficient to have signed a contract (EPC). Other key updates:

  • Ground-mounted PV installations are now permitted, not just on marginal land.
  • PV at sites of affiliated companies now also counts towards the requirement.
  • Alternative solutions, such as heat pumps, are being considered as an alternative to PV.

Battery systems: great potential, but choose wisely

Battery storage is becoming increasingly popular as a solution to fluctuating energy prices. However, caution is advised: many providers offer solutions with limited transparency, whilst the investments are high. Encon assists companies through objective simulations and tender support, ensuring risks are minimised and returns are maximised.

Smart charging infrastructure: new requirements for charging infrastructure

From January 2025, existing car parks with more than 20 parking spaces must have at least two charging points. Regulations are expected to be tightened further in 2027. At the same time, there are attractive financial benefits:

  • Increased investment allowance in 2025.
  • Local grants for charging points in cities such as Bruges and Ghent.
