Phase-out of F-gases: time for a more sustainable alternative

In 2024, Europe set out clear measures to phase out the most harmful greenhouse gases. The F-gas Regulation imposes restrictions on both new installations and the maintenance and recharging of existing systems. Well-known refrigerants such as R-22, R-404a and R-507a will be phased out gradually over the coming years and replaced by natural alternatives.

What exactly does this phase-out entail?

The exact timing varies depending on the type of system and capacity, but the broad outlines are clear. From 2027, most new systems must use a refrigerant with a GWP lower than 750. Three years later, in 2030, an even stricter standard will apply to new systems: they must then use a refrigerant with a GWP lower than 150. For existing installations, there will also be a change in the same year: from then on, they may no longer be topped up with refrigerants that have a GWP higher than 2500. From 2032, in addition to this, some existing installations may no longer be topped up with new refrigerant with a GWP higher than 750. Finally, from 2035, most new small installations will no longer be permitted to contain any fluorinated greenhouse gases at all.

Why is this important?

The phase-out goes beyond legislation alone. Companies that fail to upgrade their refrigeration systems in time risk costly downtime and reduced operational reliability. Conversely, an early transition offers clear benefits:

  • lower energy costs through more efficient systems,
  • better control and greater comfort,
  • a more sustainable image that aligns with green objectives.

How Encon supports your business

We guide businesses step by step through this transition. This begins with an analysis of your current systems and capacity requirements. We then compare potential concepts from both technical and financial perspectives and recommend the most suitable solution. We also support you during the selection of suppliers and the tendering process to ensure we arrive at a final offer that is highly competitive. If desired, we can take on the entire project management to ensure a smooth implementation.

Why Encon?

Our strength lies in the combination of in-depth technical knowledge and years of experience in project management. We support both major industrial players such as Imperial Meat, Greenyard Logistics, DeliBarn, … and smaller SMEs such as Ovidias. We always do so with the same goal in mind: a future-proof, energy-efficient and reliable refrigeration system. Because we work independently of suppliers, you always receive objective, data-driven advice.
