Repowering green energy plants: a powerful opportunity for sustainable returns
In the world of green energy, the maintenance and optimisation of existing systems are of great importance. Many older green energy installations (10 years old or older) suffer from production issues that reduce the output of the panels. This can be due to various causes, such as excessive degradation of the solar cells or inadequate maintenance. At Encon, however, we see a huge opportunity for our customers in the so-called ‘repowering’ of these installations, which enables them to significantly improve their returns.

What is repowering?
Repowering is the process of replacing outdated solar panels with more modern, efficient panels and inverters, whilst retaining the existing AC side of the installation. This not only increases energy production but also makes more efficient use of the roof space. In some cases, it is even possible to retain the green energy certificates from the old installation. This can lead to higher returns for customers and is therefore a valuable strategy for future-proofing their projects.
Why repowering is the future
There are several benefits to repowering that directly contribute to both financial and environmental gains:
- Higher yield: New panels deliver higher output per kilowatt-peak, meaning that energy yield increases, particularly when compared to older, less efficient installations.
- Room for expansion: By using more efficient panels, more power can be generated on the same roof area, creating space for additional installations.
- Approval: Thanks to our approach, we can substantiate the case to the grid operator Fluvius to obtain approval for retaining the green energy certificates following repowering. This offers certainty and peace of mind for our customers, something that is not yet widely known in the sector.
- More green energy certificates: If approval is obtained from Fluvius, the number of green energy certificates will also increase thanks to the additional energy yield, resulting in extra income.
The Encon approach to repowering
At Encon, we offer a structured approach to guide customers through the repowering process:
- Data collection: We collect at least 3 years’ worth of production data from the green energy meter (or other sources if unavailable) and, where available, irradiation data from local sensors.
- Production and Return Analysis: We compare actual production with the expected situation under normal conditions. In the event of negative production, we calculate the benefits of repowering.
- Financial model: We present a financial model that clearly demonstrates the benefits of repowering.
- Case discussion: If the installation is underperforming, we discuss and substantiate the case with Fluvius to obtain approval for the repowering.
- Next steps: Once approval has been obtained, we commence the tendering process for the repowering and can take on the project management for the construction.
Ready for the future?
Repowering not only offers an opportunity to improve the output of existing installations, but it also opens the door to potential new projects. It is a powerful way to ensure more sustainable and cost-effective energy management. At Encon, we are happy to help you capitalise on this opportunity by providing the technical analysis and guiding you through the process.
Tailor-made solution
Our approach is flexible and is offered on a daily rate basis. The scope of the project is determined by the specific situation, but we ensure that our clients always receive the right information and guidance, from the initial data collection right through to the implementation of the project.
