The EU is banning fluorescent lighting from September 2023
This comes as no surprise, of course. The European Union has been developing guidelines for several years now to make sustainable and climate-friendly lighting mandatory. It forms part of EU policy to protect the environment and public health. Does your business still use fluorescent lighting? You may continue to use your existing fluorescent lighting, but from September 2023, no new fluorescent lamps will be manufactured or imported into the European Union.

When will these products be phased out?
Earlier this year, a ban on CF (compact fluorescent) lamps came into force, and from September it will no longer be permitted to produce or import fluorescent lighting, both T5 and T8, in Europe. This means that, as a business, you may still use your existing, outdated lighting, but you will gradually find it impossible to source replacement parts. In addition, we are hearing more and more from customers that fluorescent lamps are already barely available from many suppliers, making it increasingly difficult to maintain your existing lighting. Many commercial buildings still have an infrastructure based on CFL or fluorescent technology. This will therefore need to be adapted or replaced. The European Union has introduced this legislation to encourage more environmentally friendly systems and lighting. But in addition, these older technologies use hazardous substances such as lead. All the more reason, then, to switch to sustainable alternatives?
The next step: a lighting study for LED lighting
The alternative to fluorescent lighting is LED lighting. Don’t simply replace your lighting; also review your entire infrastructure and luminaires. At Encon, we do this using a lighting study. By choosing the right installation, we can guarantee that your new lighting complies with local legislation and European standards (NEN 12464). This is important not only for compliance with the law, but the right choice of lighting can also have a positive impact on your production and the well-being of your staff. Don’t forget that government subsidies are available for LED lighting installations. To qualify for these, a lighting study is an absolute must.
LED lighting: good for the environment, staff and costs.
By switching to LED lighting, you’re doing your bit to save our planet: lower energy consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. Investing in such installations is a fine example of how sustainability and financial growth go hand in hand. Compared to fluorescent lighting, LED lighting offers higher efficiency and a longer lifespan, leading to alower energy bill and reduced maintenance costs. By switching to LED lighting, a business can therefore not only save on its energy bills but also help reduce its environmental impact. Implementing such energy-efficient systems can also enhance a company’s reputation and attract interested customers.
