Wind energy in Flanders: plenty of opportunities for a wind-filled year in 2025

The year 2024 marked a low point for the deployment of wind energy in Flanders. Only 12 new wind turbines were installed, representing less than 30% of the annual growth required to achieve the region’s 2030 renewable energy targets. This is the lowest number of new installations recorded in the past decade (Pauwels, 2024)

Misconceptions about wind turbines

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about wind energy that hinder its development. Some of the most common misconceptions are:

  • Wind turbines are noisy: Modern wind turbines are designed to operate quietly, and the noise they produce is often lower than that of many everyday activities.
  • They have a negative impact on nature: Although any construction activity can have an impact, wind turbines are carefully planned to minimise their impact on flora and fauna.
  • They are not cost-effective: Wind energy is one of the most cost-effective forms of energy production, particularly in the long term.

You can find more information about these and other misconceptions in our one-pager, which you can download below.

What does Encon do?

At Encon, we worked hard throughout 2024 to make progress despite the challenges. We secured permits for more than 70 MW of wind energy projects in Flanders and are currently constructing four new wind turbines. With our expertise, we help companies identify and seize opportunities in wind energy.
